A Parade for Luck
In most instances, people look to parades to bring good fortune to the city, praying for luck amidst collective joy. However, under the impact of COVID-19, the vibrancy of Los Angeles has been severely hindered, leading to the cancellation of many events, including the iconic Pasadena Rose Parade. Against this backdrop, my project employs AR filter technology with the aim of bringing back lost good fortune and joy to Los Angeles.
The pursuit of good fortune is a ubiquitous aspiration, yet the ways in which it is sought and expressed vary dramatically across different cultural backgrounds. Los Angeles, as a melting pot of immigrant narratives, presents a vivid and expansive panorama of these cultural interpretations. As a newcomer in this city, my role is to navigate and interweave these diverse cultural elements, blending them with my own experiences to forge a new understanding. My project is dedicated to amalgamating these varied cultural expressions of good luck, creating a parade experience that resonates with a collective harmony.
Detect Bad Luck
In the global metropolis of Los Angeles, where faith and culture converge, complex notions of misfortune are cultivated. What you consider ordinary in your daily life may be perceived as an ominous sign by others. Utilizing cross-cultural research and machine learning technology, we have unveiled the often overlooked elements of misfortune in life, further exploring how to mitigate these unfortunate aspects. By analyzing symbols and emblems of luck and bad luck in different cultures—often closely associated with folk beliefs, legends, or history—we reveal a crucial fact: a lack of understanding of these cultural contexts may lead people to inadvertently destroy what others cherish as symbols of good fortune.
Agents of Fortune
After an in-depth study and summarization of common auspicious elements across various cultures, I have created a series of 'Agents of Fortune'. These agents are a composite of assorted symbols of good luck, enabling users to effortlessly disseminate representations of fortune throughout the urban landscape via AR technology filters. This initiative serves not only as an innovative act of bringing good luck to the city but also as an academic practice aimed at enhancing mutual understanding and integration among users from diverse cultural backgrounds.
